What Is Vaar in Panchang?

Vaar is the weekday element of the Hindu Panchang — the sacred five-part Vedic calendar. The word Vaar means day. The five elements of Panchang are Tithi (lunar day), Vaar (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (planetary combination) and Karana (half-day period). Together they define the cosmic quality of every moment.

Each of the seven Vaars is ruled by a planet. The planet's energy shapes the entire day — influencing what kind of work succeeds, which deity to worship, what colour to wear and what activities to pursue or avoid. Knowing your Vaar is the simplest daily Panchang check anyone can do.

The Seven Vaars — Overview

Ravivar (Sunday) is ruled by the Sun — the king of planets. Best for authority, health, government work and Surya puja. Somvar (Monday) is ruled by the Moon — ideal for creative work, emotional decisions and Shiva worship. Mangalvar (Tuesday) is ruled by Mars — good for courage, physical activity and defeating obstacles. Budhvar (Wednesday) is ruled by Mercury — excellent for business, education, writing and communication. Guruvar (Thursday) is ruled by Jupiter — the most auspicious Vaar for new starts, learning and spiritual work. Shukravar (Friday) is ruled by Venus — best for art, beauty, relationships and celebrations. Shanivar (Saturday) is ruled by Saturn — good for discipline, property and hard work.

Vaar and Muhurat — How They Work Together

Vaar is the first filter in Muhurat selection. A good Vaar does not guarantee an auspicious Muhurat — you must also check Tithi, Nakshatra and Rahu Kaal. But a bad Vaar can reduce the power of an otherwise good Muhurat. Guruvar is considered the most universally auspicious Vaar. In the Bhrigu tradition, Thursday is the first choice for any new venture when no specific Muhurat has been calculated.

Vaar Vrat — Weekly Fasting in Hindu Tradition

Each Vaar has a traditional Vrat (fast) associated with it. Somvar Vrat is observed for Lord Shiva. Mangalvar Vrat for Lord Hanuman or Goddess Durga. Budhvar Vrat for Mercury and Ganesh. Guruvar Vrat for Lord Vishnu and Jupiter. Shukravar Vrat for Goddess Lakshmi. Shanivar Vrat for Saturn and Hanuman. Ravivar Vrat for the Sun god. Each Vrat has specific foods to eat, colours to wear and prayers to recite — shown above for today's Vaar.
